Why a Trundle Bed?

Trundles are practical and cozy beds!

A trundle bed is a versatile and practical piece of furniture that can be used in a bedroom, playroom, guest room, or anywhere where extra seating or extra bed space is required. The term “trundle bed” usually refers to a twin bed that has a second smaller bed tucked underneath. The second bed is typically on casters or rollers so that it can be easily pulled in and out. In some trundle beds, the lower bed has a mechanism that will raise it up to the same level as the twin bed.

Not all day beds are trundle beds, but a day bed can have a trundle. Day beds normally have a decorative back and arms so they have the appearance of a couch, but use a twin-size or other narrow mattress so they can also serve as a bed. When equipped with a second pull-out bed, a day bed becomes a multi-purpose piece of furniture that is more practical than a day bed alone.

A trundle bed can be made of any material that a normal bed can be made of, including wood, metal, wicker, or laminate. Mattresses used with trundle beds may be supported by slats, a linked spring support, or a solid base. Since the lower bed must fit under the upper twin bed, neither bed typically uses a box spring.

A trundle bed is a space-saving solution for a child’s bedroom, allowing you to have two beds in a room that might normally accommodate only one. Even for a larger room a trundle bed is an excellent choice, allowing more room for playing and activities when the bed is not in use.

Trundle beds are not just for kids’ rooms. A day bed with a trundle is a practical option for a home office, playroom or any other room not normally used as a bedroom. During the day, pillows can be propped up along the back of the bed to create a cozy sitting area. Then at night, the day bed and trundle can be set up to accommodate overnight guests.

A trundle bed that pops up to the same height as the upper bed is the ideal choice for a guest bedroom. If you have one guest, the lower bed can remain stowed, maximizing space in the room. If you have two guests, the pop-up trundle can be raised, comfortably accommodating both people.

Another advantage of a trundle bed is that it can be easily converted from a bed to a storage drawer. If the lower bed has a solid base, it can easily be converted into extra storage space by simply removing the mattress. In this way, a trundle bed can grow with your family. For example, when children are young and have friends over to spend the night, the trundle bed provides a perfect place for little guests. As your child ages, the trundle converts to a perfect storage solution for shoes, bulky sports equipment, books, and much more. Used in an office or guest room, the lower bed can be used to store linens, crafting supplies, holiday decorations or any other items that need to be readily accessible.
