Is a Trundle Bed Right For You?

When choosing a type of bed to furnish a room with, there are plenty of options available to choose from.

For those interested in a space saving design or for those who just need a temporary sleeping spot, a trundle bed may be the perfect piece of furniture. A trundle bed is any bed that possesses a trundle mattress underneath the main bed. It can be a daybed with trundle, a twin bed with trundle, or even bunk beds with a trundle underneath the lower bunk. You can have a wooden trundle bed or a metal trundle bed, or a combination wood and metal trundle bed. The trundle mattress slides out from under the bed when needed and stores away back under the bed when not in use. The trundle mattress typically comes in a standard twin size mattress. However, there are other space-saving options available besides a trundle bed.

A murphy bed or wallbed is another type of bed that helps save space in bedroom. The bed hinges into a wall or cabinet when not in use. When you need this extra bed for overnight visitors, you simply pull the bed down from its vertical position into a horizontal position for sleeping. The cabinet that houses the murphy bed typically has doors and conceals the whole bed. It just looks like another piece of furniture in the room. However, the cost of a murphy bed is much higher than that of a trundle mattress option on a regular bed and thus may not be cost effective.

Another alternative for temporary sleeping spaces is an air bed. To set up an air bed, you have to roll out the flattened mattress from its case and inflate it using the built in air pump or a manual or electric pump. It takes awhile to inflate depending on your type of air pump, but you can inflate it to whatever is your desired firmness. As the mattress contains air, it moves quite a lot when someone sits or moves on the mattress. You also have to watch out for holes that puncture the vinyl mattress, causing the air to leak out. After use, you have to deflate the air and roll the mattress back up to fit into the original case. A trundle bed is much easier to use.

A sleeper sofa is another space saving piece of furniture. The sofa contains a thin mattress that pulls out from the sofa when needed. First you have you remove all the cushions off the sofa to even access the mattress. Then it takes some effort to pull the metal bed mattress frame out from inside the sofa frame. When you finally are ready to sleep on this thin mattress, you have to make sure that nothing falls into the cracks between the mattress and sofa. A trundle bed is much easier and more comfortable. Just pull the trundle drawer out from under the bed and you are ready to go.
