How to Pick the Right Trundle Bed
When choosing to furnish a bedroom, there are some important items to consider. How large is the room? How many people will occupy and sleep in the room? What other furniture do you plan on having in the room? Once you know this information, then you need to consider how many beds and what size beds will you need. A trundle bed may make the most sense for the type of room you are furnishing or it may not.
What exactly is a trundle bed? A common misconception is that a daybed is a trundle bed. Any bed that stores a trundle bed mattress underneath can be called a trundle bed. The trundle mattress may roll out on a metal frame or may pull out like an underbed drawer. The trundle mattress may pop up or remain at floor level. A daybed may have a trundle mattress underneath but not all daybeds have this and thus "daybed" and trundle bed" are not interchangeable.
When should a trundle bed be utilized? A trundle bed seems to work better in a child's bedroom than in an adult bedroom, such as the master bedroom. A child's bedroom is typically smaller in size and may be used by more than one child. Twin beds with trundle or trundle bunk beds would be ideal to use in this situation. Having the extra trundle mattress underneath will provide an additional sleeping space for when your child has a sleepover and invites other children to stay overnight. The trundle mattress is usually the size of a standard twin size mattress, which is the perfect size for small children. When not in use, the trundle mattress will slide back under the main bed frame, thus leaving ample space for playing.
In comparison, it is rare to find a trundle bed in the master bedroom. The master bedroom typically has a much larger size bed frame and corresponding mattress. Queen or king or even a California king beds do not come with a trundle option, unless it is a custom request.
A guest bedroom or spare bedroom would be another place where a trundle bed would fit in well, especially if the room functions as a combination use bedroom. The trundle bed would be a great space saving option. Daybeds with trundles could function as a sofa when not in use. By having a trundle drawer under the regular bed, you have added an extra sleeping space, thus allowing more overnight guests to stay in your home.
Like any other type of bed, trundle bed frames can be created in a variety of styles and materials. Pick the one that best matches your decor, or have a custom trundle drawer added to an existing bed frame.
