Furniture for Large Families

Trundle beds are a great way to furnish a large family home.

Today's family has grown from the traditional family unit consisting of two parents and kids. The number of blended families and extended families are growing in numbers. With the increasing number of family members living together, a need is growing for furniture that can accommodate larger sized families.

For those who need multiple sleeping areas in a bedroom, trundle beds may be just the thing. Trundle beds can double the amount of sleeping spaces in any room. If you have twin beds with trundle mattresses under each bed, you can jump from two to four separate sleeping spaces.

If you have limited space in a bedroom, trundle bunk beds provide a space saving option for the kids. Bunk beds allow two bed frames to stack on top of each other, taking up floor space equivalent to a single bed frame. When you add a trundle mattress underneath the bottom bunk, you have added yet another sleeping space. So you can have three separate sleeping areas instead of one, taking up the same space when stored.

Space is at a premium especially with large families. Every room needs to be utilized at all times. A spare bedroom most likely will have to function as a combination type of room, doing double duty as a den and bedroom for example. In this type of situation, daybeds with trundles would provide the most versatility. During the day, the daybed can be utilized as a sofa, an extra place to sit when working in that room. During the night, the daybed can be used as a regular bed. Adding a trundle mattress underneath provides an additional sleeping space. When not in use, the trundle mattress easily slides underneath the daybed.

Trundle beds are easy to set up. The trundle mattress is either placed on a metal frame that can be pulled out easily from under the main bed. Or it can be placed in a drawer that slides out from underneath the bed, usually made from wood. Other temporary sleeping options, such as a sleeper sofa or inflatable air mattress, are more difficult to set up and take apart. They are also less comfortable to sleep on when compared to a trundle mattress. A trundle mattress is basically a standard twin mattress that you would find on any regular bed. A mattress in a sleeper sofa is usually much thinner, as it has to fold into the sofa with the metal frame. An inflatable air mattress takes awhile to inflate and you have to be careful that it does not get punctured and leak air. Because air makes up the sleeping surface, the whole mattress bounces if anyone sits or moves on the mattress. To take the bed apart, you then have to completely deflate the mattress and roll it up to fit back in its case.

Trundle beds come in a variety of bed frames and styles. You can get a metal trundle bed, a wood trundle bed, or any other style of trundle bed to match your decor.
